Blockchain part 2

Updated: Sep 8, 2021

This content is the second part of Blockchain part 1. The Unison company confirms that it already uses blockchain technology to save song data and thus achieve order, transparency and legitimacy in copyright processes. The income of authors in the coming years from royalties will only grow and I already mentioned this with examples in the episode “the era of musicians has arrived”.

Episode # 9

How does the Blockchain work?

Blockchain is a network that works without intermediaries through registers in thousands of computers around the world at the same time that they are called miners. The network is visible all the time and the records are open to any user.

This network leaves an orderly and chronological record through the block links which allows there to be no confusion in the records when they re-enroll or when licenses are given to third parties and more. Each record goes one ahead of the other.

Too good to be true, right?

There are 2 powerful enemies to Blockchain technology.

The first is the government, because they lose control of the information centralized and registered by them, since copyright registrations are currently made through public entities that legitimize it.

The second is the companies that outsource services to manage collections, audit reproductions, count networks and unify information, etc.

Unison Rights in statements from its CEO Jordy Puy confirms that it already uses Blockchain technology. But since it is not a tool recognized by companies or governments to support records, it is not useful for making copyright claims either. However, technology has given them the ability to sort their data efficiently so they already use it exclusively to have everything registered there. This also allows them to consolidate counts in such a way that they have fewer errors in distribution of payments.

Finally, they also do it because they consider that sooner or later the adaptation of this technology could come formally and it is better to make the records now.

This battle is far from being won and the benchmark will always be Bitcoin. If this asset that already has all the characteristics of being a world currency manages to penetrate markets and countries, the entire blockchain system will come into effect on all fronts including intellectual property and copyright.
